Learn Peace

Learn Peace is a multi-education package which includes an activity book for primary and secondary school students. Activities in the book are hands-on and encourage critical thinking. They include holding a mock UN debate on nuclear disarmament, designing a new peace symbol, conducting opinion polls on nuclear issues, and role-playing a nuclear crisis.

In 2007 a majority of governments, including the Australian Government, supported a UN resolution underscoring the importance of disarmament education. The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons has been at the forefront of efforts to realise the resolution's promises.

The Learn Peace program aims to inspire and empower students to make a difference in their future and in their world. It complements existing global, peace and values education initiatives. The activities in the workbook are divided into four categories: English, arts and drama, social studies and outreach.

To assist in implementing the workbook, ICAN Australia offers further information resources, teaching tips and support, and our education specialists can visit your school to run a workshop to introduce students to the topic.

While the issues surrounding nuclear weapons are far from light, the education resource has been designed to encourage humour and hope and always keep the focus on taking positive steps for change. ICAN takes literally the old slogan "think globally, act locally".
