ICAN Australia board
ICAN Australia is an incorporated body with its own independent board of management and advisory board. Members are nominated for the board as positions become available.
Assoc. Prof. Tilman Ruff (Chair)
Tilman Ruff is an infectious diseases and public health physician at the University of Melbourne, and has served as an NGO adviser to the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament and the Australian Government at Non-Proliferation Treaty meetings.
Dr Bill Williams
Bill Williams is a GP who has written extensively on men's health, race relations and health aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle. He is the president of the Medical Association for Prevention of War and a councillor of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.
Dr Sue Wareham OAM
Sue Wareham is a GP and former president of the Medical Association for Prevention of War. She has played an active part in the peace and anti-nuclear movement since the 1980s, and was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the community.
Prof. Fred Mendelsohn AO
Fred Mendelsohn is one of Australia’s most prominent neuro-scientists. He was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2003 and received the Order of Australia in 2004, and was director of the Howard Florey Institute at the University of Melbourne until 2008.
Dave Sweeney
Dave Sweeney has been active in the uranium mining and nuclear debate for over two decades through his work with the media, trade unions and environment groups on mining, resource and Indigenous issues. He is a national nuclear campaigner with the Australian Conservation Foundation.
Nic Maclellan
Nic Maclellan works as a freelance journalist and researcher in the Pacific islands. He has worked with returned service people and local communities affected by nuclear testing in Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands and French Polynesia. He is the author of a number of books.
Leigh Hubbard
Leigh Hubbard was secretary of the Victorian Trades Hall Council from 1995 to 2005, one of the most powerful trade union positions in Australia. He played a pivotal role in the campaign to restore common law rights for injured workers and the 1998 Australian waterfront dispute.
Dr Peter Karamoskos
Peter Karamoskos is a nuclear radiologist in private practice. He serves as the public representative on the Radiation Health Committee of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency. He is the ICAN Australia treasurer.
Catriona Standfield
Catriona Standfield is a student and active advocate for nuclear disarmament, gender equality and youth empowerment. She is the UN Youth Association of Australia’s International Year of Youth coordinator and has been selected as UNIFEM Australia’s youth delegate to the Commission on the Status of Women.
Dr Mark Zirnsak
Mark Zirnsak is the director of the Justice and International Mission Unit of the Uniting Church in Victoria and Tasmania, and the national coordinator of the Australian Network to Ban Landmines. He is also on the national steering committee for the Micah Challenge.
